It might seem hard to believe, but disc golf is still a very new sport and isn’t as widely known as one might think. While it’s undergone enormous growth in Australia as a whole, South Australia specifically has seen a burst of activity thanks to the support of local councils and community members. Those who have just recently discovered the sport will be pleased to know that SA as a whole is a great place to play!
Exploring The Land
For now, you may want to give up the dream of playing a round in the center of Adelaide, but a quick drive in the car can easily fulfill your disc golf desires thanks to the hard word of RAD. Individuals who want to play a 9-hole course that features incredible terrain with some elevation changes can head over to Woodhouse DiscGolfPark and experience the ideal layout for beginners and intermediate players. Set on a huge campus that often offers accommodations for community groups, weddings, and more, Woodhouse is currently Adelaide’s only course.
However, if you’re open to a bit of a drive, several other parts of South Australia have courses in store that will make your time in the car worth it! Let’s check them out:
Meldanda Disc Golf Course is set at a private scout camp and was made possible through their generous donations. This beginner-friendly 9-hole course is great for kids and adults alike, although most likely is something to be enjoyed if you’re already at the property.
If you’re on your way to Melbourne, you absolutely have to make a stop at Tintinara DiscGolfPark, South Australia’s first free course that’s been installed on public land. In partnership with the OPAL (Obesity Prevention and Lifestyle) program, residents there have developed this layout into something that’s truly special. Enjoy 18 different tees and grow your skills on this beautiful land.
Last but certainly not least is the Mount Gambier DiscGolfPark, a mecca of the game with 18 baskets and 27 tees. While it’s rather out of the way for Adelaide residents, it’s becoming one of South Australia’s most prized locations. Amazing views and challenging holes are just a few of the benefits that Mount Gambier has to offer.
Get Involved
Aside from just playing a round yourself and being obsessed with disc golf in your free time, South Australia offers another way to become immersed in the sport. Clubs are growing in popularity and are great ways to get to know other players in your immediate area. Most of the time, these groups will host league nights, tournaments, and sometimes even clinics to help grow the skills of their members.
There is a South Australian Disc Golf Club as well as a Mount Gambier Disc Golf Club, and we wouldn’t be surprised if many more were formed in the near future. Whether you’re an established player looking to meet new people with common interests or you’re new to the game and want to know just what disc golf is all about, getting involved in a club is one of the best ways to further the sport!
