All types of physical activity have their benefits, whether it’s keeping your heart pumping or relieving some stress after a long day. Others enjoy the endorphin rush after a good game of basketball or soccer, while still others like to keep their physique in top condition. No matter what the motivation is, there’s something to be said for playing sports.
When it comes to disc golf, we’re really in a category of our own. Sure, you can use the sport to improve your fitness level and tons of people have been known to lose a lot of weight simply by chucking plastic around. But disc golfers don’t really participate in our sport for the same reasons that other athletes tend to point to. Instead, we do it for our soul.
There’s something beautiful and simultaneously powerful that you feel when you throw a drive off the tee box. Those who are disc golf addicts know exactly what we’re talking about – watching that perfect line as it traces through the sky brings up feelings that are indescribable. It’s even more special if it was a particularly difficult shot with a mando or a lot of trees involved.
For just a split second during the flight of the disc, you feel like you’re 1000-rated, especially if you’re not! Those of us who are very recreational players get to taste a glimpse of what it’s like to be a top player in our sport during these exquisite shots.
If watching a perfect shot in flight doesn’t warm your soul, then the sound of the chains must certainly be your favorite. Whether it’s cashing a putt from outside of the circle or it’s simply the repetitive sound of players practice putting before a tournament, there’s nothing else like it.
Think for a moment about what other sports include such glorious sounds to help celebrate a victory? Sure, there are buzzers or bells found elsewhere, but the ringing of the chains lets you know that you accomplished what you set out to achieve. The ultimate soul food comes when you hear the chains from the tee box, indicating that you’ve hit an ace!
One of the most fulfilling parts of disc golf comes with the community that you’re a part of, whether it’s a local club that gathers every so often or you head on the road each year to be a part of the touring scene. The friends you make within disc golf are often some of the strongest relationships of your lifetime.
Simply talking about disc golf with others is often all they need to feel warm and fuzzy, as sharing our love of the sport is akin to doing our good deed for the day. Even if our audience isn’t quite as receptive as we would like, that doesn’t stop disc golf addicts from sharing their passion.
Why do you think that disc golf is good for the soul? What is it about the sport that drives you to keep coming back to the course time after time? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
