The original disc of choice was once the Wham-O Ultimate Frisbee Disc, but today, there are a variety of them. However, despite the many on the market, the most popular colour is still white. White discs are easiest to see during the day and night, so nearly every disc will have white somewhere in the design.
If you’ve been playing disc golf your whole life, you might find an Ultimate Frisbee disc much heavier than your typical putting disc. Ultimate Frisbee discs are thick and pack a punch when they fly across the field. The typical weight is 175 grams or heavier with a width of approximately 11 inches.
Discraft Ultra-Star Ultimate Discs and Innova’s Big Kahuna Heavyweight Ultimate Throw and Catch Disc are on the top of the Ultimate list since they’re easy to throw and available in nearly every country. However, if you’ve got to play after work, the Nite Ize Flashflight LED Light Up Flying Disc is for those who want to play after sunset.
Have you ever been in the park, skidded to a stop, and realized too late that cleats would prevent that unfortunate split? Ultimate Frisbee is riddled with dangerous slips, especially when playing in the morning dew.
Football cleats are lighter and great for beginners, preventing your foot from slipping while simultaneously allowing your foot to breathe. If they feel too tight, go for a size up, which will still give you support but will give your feet the chance to slide around a little inside the shoe.
Rugby and lacrosse cleats are the most popular for seasoned players. They have better ankle support, and they’re better for controlling your knees from twisting too much. They’re occasionally helpful for beginners to help them better understand how to control their bodies during the first few games.
When looking for the perfect clothes, allow your body to breathe. Find shirts that are light, preferably with mesh. Avoid cotton if possible; if you don’t, you might find yourself covered more with sweat than clothes.
Just like the shirts, you should always wear breathable shorts and leggings on the field. Also, know your limits with shorts: you don’t want them baggy enough to trip over when running on the field. Leggings, of course, aren’t required, but they could prevent you from tearing up your legs on the field.
Wear socks that give you good circulation and aren’t too tight. Sand socks are perfect for people who want to play on the sand. They’ll protect your feet, and they’ll protect your feet from the hot sand.
If you’re more comfortable with your throws, invest in some gloves! They’ll increase your grip, and you’ll protect your hands during wet and cold weather.
Once you’ve assembled your basics, get an additional 13 people to join you. While the number of people is highly dependent on how many people you can get out on the field, 14 is the official number of players for a standard game of Ultimate Frisbee.
What strikes your fancy: a beach game or a night on the grass? Ultimate Frisbee can be played anywhere, and it nearly is. Remember that you’ll need to change up your wardrobe for every new location: cleats for the field and protective socks for the beach.
Whatever your plan, there’s always a place to play. Just make up your own boundaries and set up cones to mark the endzones. Experiment to find the perfect boundaries for you and your team. Ultimate is refereed by the players, so you can play with the Ultimate limits!
